PPPoE (Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet) is a network protocol used to establish and manage internet connections over broadband networks. It is commonly used by Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to provide internet access to their subscribers.
In a PPPoE connection, the user’s computer or router connects to the ISP’s network using Ethernet technology and then establishes a PPP session with the ISP’s authentication server. Once authenticated, the user can access the internet through the ISP’s network.
PPPoE adds an extra layer of security by requiring users to authenticate themselves before being granted access to the network. This helps prevent unauthorized access and ensures that only authorized users can use the internet connection.
PPPoE is widely used for DSL and other broadband connections, but it has been largely replaced by newer protocols such as DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) and IPoE (IP over Ethernet).
