In a speech to the United Nations, Bill Gates praised the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) as an excellent force for change. He explained that while it is important to evaluate where we are falling short of funding commitments and targets, he thinks it is essential also to assess how effective the goals have been as a tool in the fight against global poverty. Gates believes that raising visibility around poverty measures was a brilliant purpose of MDGs and has helped identify areas where things are going well and where more effort needs to be applied. Furthermore, attention alone will not help change the future; there needs to be innovation in both tools discovered and how they are delivered. The opportunities for innovation are incredible, which can guide the search for new discoveries by showing us where innovation can bring the biggest returns. This is their genius, says Gates, who praises them as offering many opportunities for success. When adopted in 2000, Gates said he would never have predicted the power of these goals to gather heads of state and businesses worldwide in a focused effort to fight poverty and disease. Nevertheless, he concludes that now they had seen its power, they wanted to work with others at intensifying it so all people worldwide could live lives filled with health and opportunity no matter where they were born.
